The Illinois Notary Public Act (INPA) was established in 1986 to establish basic rules for proper safe notarization. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new law (SB2664) was signed in 2021 as Public Act 102-160.
The updated legislation revised the INPA to allow for Remote Ink Notarizations (RIN) and Remote Online Notarizations (RON) in real estate transactions.
With remote notarization, a notary public can review documents remotely using audio/video technology (webcam, Skype, Zoom, etc.).
The signer’s identity is confirmed by the notary. Electronic signatures are required for signers. There is also a digital version of the notary public’s seal.
